Living the dream in the BUFC Community

Our Treasurer, Billy Millar, passionate about both his local football club and his local community, is the author of our latest blog

Living the dream

“they now understand that they are not just representing a football club, they are representing a town and a community – all sides of that community”

At the end of a memorable week, I can’t help but reflect on the words of ‘big Davy’ following last Saturday night’s fantastic result at Seaview when the famous BUFC collected the League Cup for the 1st time in our history.

But what is even more inspiring is that the community has been mobilised, the queues at the Bowling Club on Wednesday night are testament to this, 1300 tickets sold on one night, and now looking like another ‘sold out’ game against Coleraine next weekend, we are seeing ‘community buy in’ on a mammoth scale.

The comparisons between what’s happening at the bottom of Warden Street and what’s happening here on Queen Street are of course very similar, for we also have fantastic ‘community buy in’ exacerbated in the last few weeks as a result of Slemish n tha Braid Credit Union opening five hours every week day, as well as our other traditional business hours.

During his playing career ‘big Davy’ was a very competent ‘centre-half’, so was Marvin Andrews who famously, during his time at Rangers told Ian Durrant to ‘keep believing’, folks let’s just do that, let’s continue to develop our ‘community buy in’ and in doing so deliver the completed Raglan Project, both in CU & RCDRS terms, which in turn will deliver for many years to come, ‘social value’ to us all.

The purpose of a Credit Union is simple, allowing members to save money and access low interest rate loans, and with their ‘not for profit, for people’ ethos, members are rewarded with an annual dividend.
